Here’s the Deal:
You Don’t Need to Pack Everything and Your Brother

We’ve rounded up the best the internet and University Housing has to offer on what to pack when it’s time to head to college, along with a handy list of skills you’ll want to bring along too.

Take a video tour of a traditional Nebraska residence hall and follow the resources below to be totally set for move-in day.

PACK IT UP

Bedding

Supplied: an extra-long twin mattress + bedframe, with the ability to loft your bed.

Bring:

Bring: Mattress protector, Plush mattress topper (if you prefer extra cushion), Sheets (for extra-long twin), Comforter/duvet + duvet cover, Blankets, Pillow + pillowcase

Furniture

Supplied: a desk + chair

Bring:

Bring: Small futon (if you plan to loft your bed and have a hangout zone), and a Bean-bag (or other comfy-style) chair

Room Accessories

Supplied: trash and recycling bins, refrigerator

Bring:

Bring: Desk fan (you’ll have an in-room thermostat, but bring this if you run hot or like the white noise), Hanging closet organizer (like this one for bonus closet shelving), Clothes hangers, Sturdy laundry bag, Desk accessories (like a pencil holder or shelf organizers), Surge protector/outlet strip, Lamp (desk, floor and/or one with a clamp for reading in bed), Alarm clock, or one of these clutch alarm apps on your phone, Pictures and wall decor, Approved adhesives for decorating (Command strips or blue painters’ tape), Ear plugs + sleep mask (for light sleepers), Small TV (there are lounges with a TV on every floor, but you may want one in your room), a Small rug

Shower/Hygiene Essentials

Supplied: shower stalls *with locking doors* + curtains

Bring:

Bring: Toothbrush, toothpaste, floss, Nail clippers, Deodorant, Cosmetics, Bathrobe, Towel set, Flip-flops/shower shoes, Shampoo, conditioner, body wash, Lotion, Shower caddy (to carry it all to and from your floor bathroom), Laundry detergent/dryer sheets

Clothing

Bring:

Bring: One set of professional attire and shoes for job interviews and presentations - Workout clothes + shoes (access to campus rec is included for all students!) - Light, waterproof jacket - Heavy winter coat + accessories (if you’ll be going home before cold weather hits, wait to swap out your seasonal attire) - Rain boots or galoshes - Snow boots - Comfy, everyday shoes for walking campus

School Supplies

Bring:

Bring: Laptop computer (recommended but not required) - A few notebooks and folders - Planner - Index cards - Pens/pencils - Scissors

Extras you’ll be glad you brought

Bring: Mini sewing kit - Lint roller - Small first aid kit - Bleach pen/stain remover - Backpack - Water bottle/thermos - Umbrella - Bug spray/repellant - Sunscreen - Mini tool kit - Credit/debit card (laundry room washing machines only accept cards, not coins or cash)

SKILLS TO BRING

Laundry: If you don’t do your own, shadow somebody who does. Learn how to treat stains, when and how to use fabric softener and what clothes don’t go in the dryer.

Simple button/sewing repair: Say hello to your new life as residence hall star when you arrive with the skills to fix loose buttons and repair unwinding hems.

Handy-person basics: Find the person who fixes things in your home and get a rundown on the difference between a Phillips-head and a flathead screwdriver as well as other fix-it basics so you can do simple repairs yourself, like swapping out the batteries on your vintage Gameboy.
