Here's the Deal - Finding Home

Here’s the Deal:
Home is a Concept,
Not a Place.

You may be blindsided by some intense crying sessions, you may miss your mama like never before, or you might just slide into your new college home like it’s nothing.

The important thing is:
No matter how you react to the move, there’s #noshame.

Mentally prepare yourself for this momentous step into adulthood with these clutch tips from people who have been through it all.

1. Rethinking home
is part of the college experience.

There will be a moment when you realize your cozy residence hall room, with friends nearby in a city you’ve come to love, feels more like “your space” than your hometown bedroom does. That’s all part of growing up and creating your own home apart from your roots.

2. Push yourself
to stay.

If you live nearby, you might want to run home to the warm and fuzzy feels of family the instant weekend one rolls around. Resist the urge. Make plans with new friends and start planting some new roots instead—it will make things way easier in the long run.

3. You
aren’t alone.

You’ll be surrounded by people who just moved away for the first time too. Go ahead and be vulnerable with your roommate and new friends if you’re feeling homesick. You’ll likely find somebody who’s totally on the same page or who will coax you out of your room for some pick-me-up fun.

4. Your home
is still important.

The home you leave to move into college will likely always hold a special place in your heart—you don’t have to cut all ties to create your own new home. Feel free to bring little pieces of it with you to college—maybe a blanket, stuffed animal or just a boatload of pics.
